The lead story

McQueen parts ways with Seán McGirr after three years, as Calvin Klein also loses its creative director

Two houses losing creative leadership on the same day is less coincidence than symptom. At McQueen, Seán McGirr's exit arrives alongside workforce cuts and a smaller retail footprint, suggesting Kering is rethinking the brand's entire scale, not just its aesthetic. Calvin Klein's Veronica Leoni lasted four seasons before being shown the door, despite being appointed specifically to revive the Collection runway line. The churn tells a story about how much pressure sits on a single hire to fix structural problems that a creative director cannot actually solve.

This year's architecture prizes favour quiet buildings over showpieces

RIBA gave its Stirling Prize to Croydon Council housing, and Bottega Veneta backed a new prize won by Junya Ishigami, a Japanese architect.

Both choices put everyday use and modesty ahead of spectacle.

The Dissent
Bottega Veneta backing the Barragan Prize shows fashion taking architecture seriously, and choosing Ishigami suggests real taste, not just deep pockets. But a single well-chosen laureate does not resolve the central tension: architecture prizes funded by fashion houses still serve the brand's cultural positioning first and the discipline second. The Pritzker has no corporate patron for a reason. When the sponsor's aesthetic interests and the field's best candidates align perfectly, as they do here, the prize looks credible. The risk arrives when they diverge, and there is no mechanism in a brand-funded prize to guarantee they won't.
We Predict
Kering will announce Seán McGirr's successor at McQueen by the end of February 2027.
Confidence: 70%
Within By end of February 2027
Kering has confirmed the departure publicly and stated new creative leadership will be announced soon, indicating a search is already under way or a candidate is close to confirmed. Fashion houses operating under Kering's reporting structure face commercial pressure to have a creative director named well before the next seasonal show cycle, which for McQueen would fall in early 2027. The alternative hypothesis is that Kering delays the announcement to reposition the brand's format entirely, as it has done with some smaller houses, but the McQueen scale makes an extended interregnum commercially costly.

Apparatus: expanding from lighting into full design showrooms
Apparatus, the New York lighting and design studio co-founded by Gabriel Hendifar, is opening a Miami showroom and debuting a London collection, two moves that together suggest it is scaling from a specialist lighting name into a broader interiors presence. The timing is pointed: design fairs and showroom culture are where the most commercially serious interior commissions begin. A brand that built its reputation on considered, craft-led lighting is now betting that reputation travels into full room design.
