adidas and JD Sports take Villanelle 109 metres above London for an intimate rooftop set

adidas and JD Sports hosted Gene Gallagher's band Villanelle at Battersea Power Station for an intimate performance through Elevator Music, the platform known for putting artists in lifts. The stunt sits 109 metres above the city and follows the launch of adidas Originals' new staple apparel campaign. What's interesting here isn't the event itself. It's that a retail partnership chose a vertigo-inducing live music moment as its primary brand expression, not an ad, not a drop, not a lookbook.

Brands now borrow stages, not shop floors

adidas held a rooftop set, Sotheby's sold art in a private apartment, and Miu Miu had Alice Diop curate its show. Each borrowed a setting outside the usual brand space to reach new audiences.

The Dissent
Miu Miu handing its Art Basel moment to Alice Diop shows luxury has found a credible path into serious cultural conversation. The received reading is that this represents a new depth of brand authorship, fashion commissioning film rather than decorating it. But Diop's exhibition is a single room at a single fair, and Miu Miu's name is on the door. The artistic credibility belongs to Diop; the brand gets the association without the risk. That's not depth, it's a very elegant sponsorship, and the distinction matters when the next house does the same thing with a less rigorous filmmaker.
We Predict
Sotheby's will host another selling exhibition inside a home beyond Paris before April 2027.
Confidence: 70%
Within By April 2027
The Chez Sotheby's Paris format produced a $150 million presentation timed to Art Basel Paris and generated significant editorial coverage. The mechanism is straightforward: a repeatable format with low production cost relative to return, easily exported to other cities with art fair calendars, such as London for Frieze or New York for Armory. The alternative hypothesis is that this was a one-off Paris activation tied to a specific real estate or collector relationship that can't be replicated. That would have to be true for this call to miss.
One to Watch
Crew Clothing: betting on physical retail while others retreat
Crew Clothing has opened a 1,690 sq ft store at Westfield London in White City, part of a stated ongoing investment in UK retail expansion. While most mid-market lifestyle brands are trimming floor space, Crew is adding it, and in one of the country's highest-footfall shopping destinations. Worth watching to see whether the bet on physical presence translates to the kind of brand visibility that digital channels have stopped delivering for labels at this price point.
