1Music and Entertainment

SoundCloud acquires Nina Protocol after its shutdown, absorbing the decentralised music experiment into the centralised platform it was built to replace.

Nina Protocol set out to route around platforms entirely, giving artists direct ownership of their music and revenue on-chain. It shut down, and SoundCloud has now acquired it and its music community.

Why it mattersRunning a decentralised platform appears to have been too hard, though its community and curation still had value to a buyer.

What it means

Platforms absorb what they could not build.

SoundCloud buying what was left of Nina Protocol, Samsung launching smart glasses with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker as the face, and Instagram's scripted output overtaking YouTube's through former studio executives all show platforms absorbing what they did not build. The winner is not the one that starts from scratch but the one close enough to the edge to take in the results at the right moment. Today's apparent rivals become tomorrow's acquisitions.

One to watch

SoundCloud will launch a dedicated artist-ownership revenue tool built on Nina Protocol's technology before the end of Q1 2027.
