Cancelled culture just became the Met's new dress code.

The lead story

The Met Gala's Galliano cancellation signals a permanent shift in how institutions manage creative rehabilitation.

The Metropolitan Museum has pulled the 2027 Met Gala theme built around John Galliano, killing the 'John Galliano: Horizons' exhibition before it opened. The decision is not about Galliano specifically: it is about institutions discovering that cultural rehabilitation, once a private process managed by editors and executives, is now a public vote conducted in real time. Demna completed his own rehabilitation arc and is already six months into the Gucci creative director role, but that arc was managed through fashion's internal channels, not submitted to public referendum. What the Met cancellation confirms is that the museum, the most powerful arbiter of fashion's historical record, no longer controls the terms on which controversial figures re-enter the canon.

Institutions lost editorial control. Audiences claimed it.

Three stories today point to the same structural transfer of authority: the Met cancels Galliano because public backlash overrode curatorial judgement; Vaseline renames itself because two million Instagram views outweighed its brand team; and AllSaints installs Aaron Esh as creative director after a chance social encounter rather than a formal search process.

In each case, the institution did not lead, it responded. The implication for any brand or cultural organisation that still operates on a top-down programming model is direct: the audience has already made the decision, and the institution is increasingly just signing off on it.

The Dissent
The received wisdom on the Galliano cancellation is that public accountability has finally reached fashion's last untouchable figures. The flaw in that reading is selection bias: Demna, whose own history of provocation is extensively documented, completed a full rehabilitation and is now running Gucci with institutional blessing. The difference between the two cases is not the severity of the offence but the presence of a powerful internal advocate willing to absorb the reputational cost. The Met had no such advocate, and cancelled accordingly. This is not accountability; it is risk management dressed as principle, and the next rehabilitation cycle will simply route around public forums rather than submit to them.
We Predict
Gucci will announce a second major campaign film under Demna before end of 2026, doubling down on the melancholy, archive-referencing register established by Primavera.
Confidence: 70%
Within By end of Q4 2026
Demna's Primavera film is explicitly framed as tone-setting for the house, not a one-off. The choice of Johan Renck as director and the deliberate emotional register signals a programmatic campaign strategy, not a single statement piece. Luxury houses under new creative directors historically release two to three campaign films in their first full year to consolidate the new visual grammar. The alternative hypothesis is that Gucci pivots to a higher-energy campaign for the holiday season to protect commercial performance, but Demna's track record at Balenciaga suggests he holds creative register under commercial pressure rather than abandoning it.
One to Watch
Aaron Esh: the independent designer inheriting a high-street brand
Esh's appointment at AllSaints is the clearest signal yet that mid-market fashion brands are raiding the independent show circuit rather than the luxury alumni pool for creative leadership. The question is whether a designer whose reputation was built on small-run, critically admired collections can translate that sensibility to AllSaints' commercial scale without losing the thing that made the hire interesting in the first place. Watch the first collection for signals of compromise or conviction.
